Press release
Strasbourg, 26th of November 2024
“This vote is a victory for the protection of our health, biodiversity and ecosystems. It also shows that the concerns expressed by many citizens across Europe have been heard », said Christophe Clergeau.
MEPs have just rejected the placing on the market of eight varieties of GMO maizes and cottons, modified to resist herbicides and produce Bt insecticidal toxins. This vote reflects concerns about the lack of sufficient studies on the safety of these plants for the environment and human health, as well as the high risks they could pose:
● For human health, with concerns about their allergenic potential and their effects on the immune system.
● For soil and ecosystem biodiversity, transfers of toxins and genetic material can destabilize food chains.
● For the overall environment, due to insecticide properties affecting non-target species and undermining biodiversity.
“We have just sent a clear signal in favour of sustainable agriculture and four international commitments, including those related to the Paris Agreement. Enhancing food security while protecting ecosystems must remain a priority for Europe and the world », concluded the MEP.
